trendwatching.coms April 2010 Trend Briefing covering "BRAND BUTLERS"

http://www.trendwatching.com/briefing/

they call it ‘brand butlers’ but it’s essentially about how brands can be useful to their target audience. A lot of the examples seem to be Iphone app-centric, but there are plenty of other on/offline examples. Interesting read and definitely an area where there is still huge scope for innovation and customer impact.

YouTube - Eric Whitacres Virtual Choir - Lux Aurumque

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7o7BrlbaDs&feature=player_embedded

Eric Whitacre asked hundreds of youtubers to upload a video of themselves singing Lux Aurumque, spliced the audio together to make the participants into a ‘choir’, and then created this virtual video wall to show the whole thing back on Youtube. Genius, and beautiful.

Opera Mini Countup - piling on the pressure?

http://my.opera.com/community/countup/index.dml

There’s a lot of discussion in the app developer community about the amount of time it can take for an Iphone app to be approved for inclusion in the App Store. Opera have cleverly created a fun competition out of this, and in doing so, are shining a spotlight on how long their application takes and piling the pressure on Apple to do it quickly. Genius.

TLists - Search. Curate. Join.

http://www.tlists.com/

T lists provides visitors with the tools to find and apply to join twitter lists. So for example, if you want to follow tech journalists, you can do that search, find lists and who curates them, and then apply to join directly from the website (no guarantee you’ll get in though!). Handy.

YouTube - Hot Wheels Custom Motors Cup Challenge

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPGhqQ9vZPM&annotation_id=annotation_763674&feature=iv

Interactive video campaigns on Youtube are becoming more common, but they’re still innovative enough to be quirky & fun. This campaign for Hot Wheels strings together a series of animations into a kind of ‘interactive story’, but does so in a way which is fun, easy to engage with and actually quite addictive. Great way to keep consumers immersed in your brand.

Nestle get Youtube to pull Kit Kat viral... #socialmediafail

http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/autofrontpage

I was interested to see how Nestle would respond to the brilliant viral campaign from Greenpeace yesterday, and was stunned to read that they’d used a copyright infringement claim to have the video pulled by Youtube… NOOOOOOOOOOOOO….. who’s advising them over there!? My 2 year old son could have told them that would stoke the flames, draw another prominent brand into the story, and give the viral additional impetus. If he could talk.

A video response from the CEO talking about the difficulties of sourcing these materials globally, the complexities of the supply chain, a commitment to urgently review their materials sourcing, and highlighting the efforts they making already and some of the good they do in the world… as they say in the update on the Greenpeace website, censorship is so last century.

Some graduates in the US made a movie using scanned images from an HP photo scanner for the Disposable Film Festival. Nice creative inspiration.

British Airways attacks strike action with viral campaign

http://www.brandrepublic.com/News/990120/British-Airways-attacks-strike-action-viral-campaign/

This is really interesting… BA are going on the offensive via social media to try to win over the public in their dispute with the unions. They’ve hired Agency.com to put together a social media strategy, and have launched a ‘viral’ video from the chief exec.

Whilst I have no idea what’s meant to be viral about the video, it is a great example of how businesses are using social media as a direct-to-consumer PR vehicle when winning hearts and minds is critical.

STUFFYERFACE - THE MUSTACHE RIDE!

This is what Augmented reality was invented for…. the trying on of moustaches. And if AR isn’t your bag… there’s an app for that too.
